Svevind: Environmental action plan

INTERNATIONAL COMPANY FOR SWEDISH ENERGY SUPPLY

Svevind is a wind power company based in northern Sweden for 20 years. The company plans, develops, sells and operates land-based wind power projects. The projects vary in size and include everything from individual to several hundred wind turbines.

Svevind's clear vision and perseverance have made the company one of the leading players in the development and operation of wind power in Sweden. The company wants to contribute to reducing global warming and help Sweden become self-sufficient in renewable energy.

Svevind has long been one of Ecogain's most loyal customers and partners. The two companies have developed their business models in parallel and have been working together for over 15 years.

ONE OF EUROPE'S LARGEST WIND FARMS

Svevind's portfolio includes the Markbygden project in Piteå municipality. Here, Svevind is building one of the largest wind power plants in Europe, with a total of up to 1101 wind turbines, divided into several phases. When fully developed, Markbygden will produce approximately 10 TWh each year. This corresponds to 6.6% of Swedish electricity production. Markbygden makes a significant contribution to the transition to renewable energy.

Ecogain has for more than 10 years been Svevind's expert support in different phases of the development of Markbygden.

FINANCING WITH A STRONG SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS

With 179 wind turbines and an installed capacity of 650 MW, the Markbygden ETT sub-phase, operated by a company of the same name, is the single largest wind farm currently under construction in Europe. The project was awarded the Europe Wind Deal of the Year in 2018, with an innovative combination of Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and a number of strong international financiers with a strong focus on sustainability. The financiers require that the environmental management follows the standards set by the IFC.

RESULTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION PLAN

The work based on IFC Performance Standards resulted in an Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP), an environmental action plan with clear and relevant commitments that the company supports. The plan is an important condition for the financing of the very large wind power project.

The environmental action plan focused on what the company has committed to in various aspects according to the following criteria:

  • IFC Performance Standards 1: Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts

  • IFC Performance Standards 6: Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Living Natural Resources

  • IFC Performance Standards 7: Indigenous people
