Fortum: Klarälven baseline analysis and measures

KLARÄLVEN BASELINE ANALYSIS AND MEASURES

Fortum commissioned Ecogain to develop concrete proposals on how the company can change the management of its land surfaces around the hydropower plants. The solution is a valuable part of the work towards the UN's global environmental goals.

Since Fortum owns large areas of land at its sites, the company asked itself whether there are ways to manage all that land responsibly. After all, it is only there alongside the main operations.

Ecogain was commissioned to conduct an initial expert analysis of eight power plant dams in Klarälven's lower regions. The analysis focused on the conditions for biodiversity.

THE SOLUTION

The solution was to show concretely how Fortum can change the management of its land areas around hydropower plants, ranging from lawns to forest environments. Ecogain's proposal includes concrete solutions that will make a difference. Fortum will increase the biodiversity of its facilities. Everything is in line with the UN's global goals.

FORTUM STANDS OUT IN ITS REPORTING ON BIODIVERSITY

In the Biodiversity Index 2020, Fortum topped the list, together with the Danish wind power company Ørsted, of how companies in Sweden and the Nordic region manage biodiversity. Fortum has a Biodiversity Action Plan that outlines the company's goals, responsibilities, timelines and partners regarding biodiversity. The company is also clear that it works actively with biodiversity issues in its value chain. For example, the company describes how biodiversity is one of the aspects evaluated when purchasing raw materials such as coal. Fortum also reports on various habitat restorations carried out during the year, with clear descriptions of locations, areas, the species targeted by the measures and the measures taken.
